High School - The Worries and Misconceptions.

posted Jun 9, 2014, 7:43 AM by Unknown user   [ updated Jun 9, 2014, 7:43 AM by Unknown user ]

Hey there. (: Today's blog will be about the upcoming events about to unfold; high school and the worries that come along with it..

It isn't a total shocker. Every freshman worries to some extent before entering grade 9. Whether it's a thought or two, we all think about who'll change over the summer, what classes we'll be in, and how we're going to get through four entire years of teenage drama, all nighters, and .....

The Fault In Our Stars.

posted May 14, 2014, 10:22 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 15, 2014, 11:02 AM by Unknown user ]

Hello. Today's blog will be about one of the best books I've ever come across in my fourteen years of life; The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.

I cannot explain to you how much I love this book. I've never been so emotionally invested in a story in my entire life. This book is one of a kind and it has touched my heart in a way that is too complicated to put into words. But, alas, I will try my best.

The Fault In Our Stars is a romantic, humorous, heart breaking, tragedy about two lovers; sixteen year old Hazel Grace Lancaster and seventeen year old Augustus Waters.

Both of the teenagers are cancer patients; Hazel is currently fighting cancer and Gus is in remission. This story is written differently than any other novel I've read. It is simple yet so complicated. At times, I would sit at my bed and stare at the same page for hours, pondering and fathoming in a daze.

John Green wrote this novel in such a way that has me at a loss for words. There is no way to possibly explain this book without being tongue tied and confused. You will only truly understand its meaning after you've flipped through every single page and shed at least one tear.

You see, this book has taught me how to be in control of my body instead of having control over my soul. Too hard to understand? Here is a quote from the book; a famous concept used metaphorically on more than one occasion.

"It's a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing."

How does one explain that? Quotes like those are what drew me in and had me literally fall in love with Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace.

This book taught me that we don't have a choice in this world. We will be hurt at one point in our lives. But, we do get to decide who can and cannot hurt us. It teaches us to like our choices and to spend each day, slowly. Each day is an infinity that's we've been given. We don't get to choose how many infinities we're given either, but we can take each infinity and make it worth a billion more. We can fall in love, even if we're grenades that are about to explode. We all deserve a little love to hold on to.

My favourite page in the book was page 260. Having read it a billion times, I've got it memorized. It's the one page that has me in tears every time. It meant a lot to me and I'm hoping it has the same effect on others who find that bond between themselves and the characters.

I'll type it out for you, below...

"I can't talk about our love story, so I will talk about math. I am not a mathematician, but I know this: there are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There's .1 and .12 and .112 and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within numbered days, and I'm grateful."

I hope you consider reading this book. It changed my perspective on many things.

My Fear Landscape.

posted May 14, 2014, 9:53 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 9:57 PM by Unknown user ]

Hi. (: Today's blog topic will be a strand from Divergent, talking about fears.

If you've had the chance the read Divergent by Veronica Roth, I'm sure you know what the fear landscape room is... I mean, that's what explains the whole Four-Tobias ordeal, right? If you have no clue what I'm talking about, don't worry. I won't give away any spoilers or I'll try my best not to!

To recap, the fear landscape room is quite self explanatory. To elaborate further, it is basically a room in which one faces their biggest fears. It might sound bearable to you, but it really is tough.

    My biggest fears are:

    - Swimming. (I'm terrified.)
    - Clowns. (They're just creepy.)
    - Exorcisms. (I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about them.)
    - Oblivion. (The Fault In Our Stars reference and I really actually am afraid of it.)
    - Death. (I don't think this requires an explanation.)

I would probably be able to swim away from the creepy clowns if I had to, but living through an entire exorcism would be the worst possible thing for me... Dying while in oblivion would be a nightmare.

Anyways, what are you fears? Comment down below!

    Thank you for reading. (:

Racism In 2014?

posted May 14, 2014, 9:28 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 9:28 PM by Unknown user ]

Hello. Today's blog post will be about racism today, followed by a video that has gone viral.

I found this video of a white man harassing a black woman on a public transit bus on May 6th, 2014 in New York. He was making comments about her ethnicity, her appearance, and was mocking her accent. This man told the woman to get off her seat and sit at the back of the bus, which he referred to as the "black of the bus" in an attempt to be humorous. His jokes were dry and just plain rude to say the least.

A group of black people then stand up to defend the lady, telling the man to "back off" and "leave her alone". Sadly, he didn't and things began to get slightly violent. The tension in the video rises dramatically as does the anger. Personally speaking, it actually made me quite sad.

Racism in 2014? Our world is diverse and multicultural. It's time for everyone to accept that fact and move on with their lives. Some people shock me. They're inconsiderate and close minded; two of the worst characteristics anyone could possess.

Since when is it okay to make fun of someone's skin colour? Who said it was okay? We're all human.

Here is a poem by Oglala Lakota, referring to racism and discrimination toward coloured people.

“When I'm born, I'm black.

When I grow up, I'm black.

When I'm in the sun, I'm black.

When I'm sick I'm black.

 When I die, I'm black.

But you white folk...

 When you're born, you're pink.

When you grow up, you're white.

 When you're cold, you're blue.

 When you're sick, you're green.

 When you die, you're grey.

And you have the nerve to call me coloured?"

I was reminded of this poem while watching the video. Both spoke out to me and I hope they did to you as well.

Here is the link to the video, if you want to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUPfyvI4W3k

There may be some derogatory language and terms used in the video which I apologize for in advance.

    Thanks for reading.

Wattpad.

posted May 14, 2014, 9:04 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 9:06 PM by Unknown user ]

Hi again. (: Today's blog will be about a website and stories that are posted on it.

I've been using a website called Wattpad for a couple of years now. It is a place where anyone and everyone can write stories and post them for other members to read. Having an account isn't necessary if you would simply like to read stories.

The website gives you a chance to interact with other young writers from around the globe. Yes, "stranger danger" should always remain a top priority, but exchanging ideas with those who share the same interests as you is something I enjoy doing as do many others.

The website allows you to write freely without the lingering fear of being judged. You don't need to have your name on the website. Your user could be something as simple as Blue101. No one would need to know who you were, but your stories could inspire people around the world.

I've been writing anonymously on Wattpad for the longest time. To this day, no one knows who I am and I intend to keep it that way. I can let out frustration and stress that anything or anyone gives me and just write. A lot of my stories have gone viral and I'm proud of my accomplishments.

If writing isn't your thing, you can read instead! One of my all time favourite stories on Wattpad is called Late Summer Rain. It was one of the stories that taught me to value life. It taught me to refrain from being judgmental and showed me the power and extent of love.

The website offers all types of stories. From fiction, to romance, to folklore, to fan fiction, I guarantee it has something for everyone. If you'd like, you can click the links below to visit the site as well as read Late Summer Rain.

    The website: https://www.wattpad.com

I hope you learn to like this website as much as I do.

    Thank you for reading!

Reading Books Or Minds?

posted May 14, 2014, 8:50 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 8:52 PM by Unknown user ]

Hello. Today's blog post will be about a superpower I'd die to have.

We all have that one super power we really want to have, but can't. From time travel, to invisibility, to the ability to fly... Oh, how I wish our lives were a little more magical!

Personally, I would really love to read minds. I mean, always knowing what the other person is thinking? How cool would that be?!

On a more serious note though, a lot of teenagers lie and back stab at this age because... Well, because we're all insecure and self conscious. Some people on the other hand, decide to take these negative emotions and ruin someone else just to feel better about themselves which is pretty insane. I'm really tired of having to keep up with rumours about me said by those who hate me. Readings minds would be so much easier!

You could even use this ability to your advantage academically... Knowing the answers to that big Math test coming up? Yes please! There would be no need to study; we wouldn't learn anything either... But, it would help relieve some of the stress school brings.

Also, it would somewhat be like fortune telling. You could run your own business! Telling people if their relationships are actually going to go somewhere or what they could expect as a birthday present? I just think it would be too much fun to mess around with people.

But, this ability could also save humanity.

     Imagine...

A gang of high school boys are hanging out in the park and you're nearby... They're planning to rob the corner store but refuse to discuss it out loud in fear of being overheard... But you, with your super cool ability, know what they're wanting to say and have the option to stop something bad from happening!

Anyways, I've always wanted to be a mind reader. Sadly, some things are just never meant to happen.

Comment what ability you would like to have!

    Thank you for reading.

Cystic Fibrosis.

posted May 14, 2014, 8:29 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 8:31 PM by Unknown user ]

Hello. Today I will be discussing a medical condition called Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic Fibrosis is a medical condition in which one's lungs are filled with  a fluid that makes it hard to breathe. It also has affects on the digestive system. Those with CF are often underweight and look young for their age because they have trouble digesting fats and proteins. Also, this condition sadly lessens one's life span. Life expectancy for those who are diagnosed with CF is short.

This condition causes death. Lung infections and lung failure is one of the many ways Cystic Fibrosis takes away lives. It cannot be cured, but the live expectancy of those who face it can be increased with medication and procedures. This fatal disease though, cannot be prevented. It is genetically passed down and can affect anyone at random.

The reason I'm writing this blog is because I know three people who have been affected by it personally. All of them like to sing and are amazing. These people are Kayden Stephenson and Jessa and Gwynne Furches.

I found Kayden on YouTube and Vine a while back and learned that he deals with this medical illness. He is a kind, bright, young teenage boy who finds peace in music. I've never had a conversation with him, but I can tell he's living his life to the fullest. He knows his time is limited, but he makes the best of it. He's positive and a lovable person.

I've known Jessa and Gwynne Furches for a few years now. They are two identical twin sisters who adore Michael Jackson and also love singing. They're talented, young musicians who try their hardest to deal with CF. Unfortunately, Gwynne happens to end up in the hospital more frequently, whereas Jessa doesn't. This makes me sad because they're lovely people. I've talked to them on more than one occasion and they're so inspiring. Both of them face mental illness as well such as depression, but day by day, they're learning to be strong. I'm proud to say that Gwynne is one month clean of self harm and so is Jessa. Dealing with their illness is hard, but the Furches twins are learning to love the little things in life. I love both of them to death.

Those affected by CF are amazing people. Having a genetic disease does not make them any different than you or I. They're often the most talented individuals you'll ever meet.

If you would like to, please check out Jessa and Gwynne's YouTube channel. They post videos of themselves singing and have also put out many songs on iTunes to raise awareness for CF. The link will be posted down below.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you learned something new today.

Racial Differences Featuring Disney Princesses.

posted May 14, 2014, 7:03 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 7:03 PM by Unknown user ]

Hello again. In today's blog, I'll be bringing back some of your childhood with Disney!

We all grew up watching those classic Disney fairy tales such as Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But, how many of those princesses have different ethnicities and aren't of European heritage? Can you guess?

Well, there are only four and the first Black Disney princess was introduced in 2009!

    Pocahontas, Mulan, Jasmine, and Tiana.

Pocahontas portrayed the Native American culture beautifully.
Mulan is the Chinese born and raised warrior-princess.
Jasmine is the stunning Arabian princess.
    Tiana is the African-American beauty.

All four princesses were absolutely stunning as were the White princesses, but I really wish Disney had incorporated more ethnicities. This would've broadened children's minds from a young age, having them accommodate and appreciate the varying cultures all around.

Luckily, a Tumblr artist creatively changed the ethnicities of a few Disney characters! Drawing each typical princess out with new skin tones, she gave each princess an exotic make over! I thought it was amazing. Every single princess was absolutely stunning.

    Have a look!

I really hope you found them as gorgeous as I did. We're all princes and princesses and our different skin tones make us all the more beautiful.

    Thanks for reading!

Same Love.

posted May 14, 2014, 6:45 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 6:48 PM by Unknown user ]

Hey. In today's blog post, I'll be talking about a song by Macklemore. It is called "Same Love". Have you ever heard it?

The lyrics that I'll be focusing on are written down below...

"Man, that's gay" gets dropped on the daily
We become to numb to what we're saying
    A culture founded from oppression
Yet we don't have acceptance for 'em
Call each other faggots behind the keys of a message board
A word rooted in hate, yet our genre still ignores it
Gay is synonymous with the lesser
It's the same hate that's caused wars from religion
Gender to skin colour, the complexion of your pigment
The same fight that led people to walk-outs and sit-ins
It's human rights for everybody, there is no difference!
    Live on and be yourself...

In all honesty, these lyrics mean a lot to me. I felt like I could connect to these words directly because I've been in a position of being a victim of discrimination and I am one often.

I am not white. I never have been and never will be. I have no European heritage whatsoever and I will not hide it. My skin colour isn't pale as snow, neither is it of African heritage. My skin colour is brown and because of it, people who are of different races think it is okay to make fun of me. My religion is also something that becomes a barrier and is one of the reasons making good friends is difficult at times.

As much as I love this school, there are people who make it an undesirable place to learn in. Students I've known all my life, people who I used to call my friends find it funny to make fun of those who share the same religion and ethnicity as me. Obviously, there are bad apples in every tree, but I really wish these people would open up their eyes a little wider and see what they're saying.

Statuses on Facebook, Snapchat stories, Instagram posts, Tweets, and verbal communication are some of the ways these close minded students throw knives at the backs of others. When confronted, they automatically become innocent and will ruin your entire school year with rumours, bullying, and gangs of friends to back them up. This is the harsh reality of some of the people you and I both go to school with.

Speaking in accents, mocking, and using physical actions are also something that is commonly seen in the school hallways. They then laugh about it, finding it hilarious that they're capable of stomping over others. I know I'm not the only victim, but I'm speaking on behalf of everyone who attends Ruth Thompson Middle School or anyone who is discriminated worldwide.

Is it my fault that I was born a certain colour?

I didn't have a choice. I didn't get to customize myself before I was born. How inconsiderate can you be?

Is it my fault that I practice the religion that I desire?

It is what I believe in. It isn't any of your business to begin with. You can practice your faith and I'll practice mine. Deal?

It isn't my fault.

It isn't anyone's fault. I hope you all realize that soon. There are billions of people who live on planet Earth. People with beautiful accents and exotic skin tones. We share different morals and have different views on different things.

We're all different. We're all human. We're all beautiful.

If you haven't already, listen to the song right here:

Love who you want to love. Be who you want to be. Live how you want to live.

Thank you for reading this post.

The Rescuing Hug.

posted May 14, 2014, 5:53 PM by Unknown user   [ updated May 14, 2014, 5:56 PM by Unknown user ]

Hello there. (: I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to actually click on this blog and begin reading it. Today, I will talk about an article I found online while I was web surfing. This story is an older one. It takes place in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1995 when two identical twin girls are born.

A pair of twin girls were born on October 17th, 1995, twelve weeks prior to their due date. Brielle and Kyrie were immediately put into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in separate incubators. If you're wondering, an incubator is, it is: " an enclosed apparatus providing a controlled environment for the care and protection of premature or unusually small babies" according to Google.

The girls weighed in at only 2 lbs, but thankfully, Kyrie began gaining weight. As Kyrie was becoming healthier, Brielle was weak and remained the same weight. Brielle was having breathing difficulties and issues with her heart and soon became very unstable. The girls' parents were informed that there was a high possibility that Kyrie would be the only baby that would survive.

On November 12th, Brielle went into critical condition. Her skin began turning into a blue-gray colour, her heart beat racing. She was unable to breathe properly and was hiccuping; a worrying sign that she had minimal time left. The doctors tried to do everything they could to stabalize her, but nothing was working.

A nurse then fought with the doctors, wanting to try an old European method that required the twins to be double bedded. The nurse then put the dying child into the same incubator as Kyrie. Brielle and Kyrie snuggled up against each other, Kyrie putting her left arm around her dying sister as if to hug her. In seconds, Brielle began to regain her health. Her heart beat steadied and her breathing slowed down to a perfect pace, all with one simple touch from her sister.

I thought this story was beautiful. It truly presented life's tiny miracles in such a heart warming way. A life was saved and that just proves how the smallest things can change someone's destiny.

Brielle and Kyrie are now young women, leading successful lives. Imagine how different things would have been if Brielle hadn't survived. It truly is a worrying thought, isn't it?

Thank you again for reading this today. I hope you liked this story as much as I did.

- Reeham.

Brielle is on the left, Kyrie is on the right. :) xo
